چکیده

Biochemical mutants which require guanine but are unable to utilize adenine and hypoxanthine obviously represent a very rare type of purine deficiency in microorganisms. So far, guanineless mutations have been observed only in the ascomycet, ous fungus, Ophiostoma multiannulatum, in which seven strains of this biochemical type were isolated after x-ray or ultraviolet irradiation (l-3). Three of these strains were obtained with the aid of a selective enrichment technique (3). In previous studies the nutritional requiremenbs of some of these guanineless mutants were analyzed from a quantitative point of view, and it was also found that adenine and hypoxanthine inhibited their rate of growth (2). In the present communication, certain new facts are reported regarding the physiology of the guanineless Ophiostoma mutants, e.g. the effect of 2,6-diaminopurine. Their peculiar tendency to change spontaneously into guanine-hypoxanthineless double mutants has also been investigated and is explained as a consequence of certain biochemical peculiarities of the mutants in question.

Detection of a new canine parvovirus mutant in Iran

BACKGROUND: Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is one of the major causes of fatal gastroenteritis in young dogs. After emergence of CPV-2, two new variants were reported and named CPV-2a and CPV-2b. In 2001 the newest variant was reported and named CPV-2c. The difference between CPV strains is related to amino acid changes in viral capsid protein (VP2). OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was geneti...

Studies on hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase in fibroblasts from patients with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Evidence for genetic heterogeneity.

The Lesch-Nyhan syndrome has been characterized by an apparently complete deficiency in erythrocytes of an enzyme of purine metabolism, hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase. Recent studies have suggested that low levels of this enzyme may be present in skin fibroblasts cultured from these patients. In the present study, we have confirmed the presence of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphorib...

ADAPTATION OF THE TWEEN 80 ASSAY WITH A RESOLUTION V FRACTIONAL FACTORIAL DESIGN AND ITS APPLICATION TO RANK Ophiostoma fungi WITH WOOD EXTRACTIVE DEGRADING CAPABILITIES

Wood extractives in radiata pine are the source of the observed pitch problems in the pulp and paper industry. Various methodologies have been studied and used to reduce or eliminate their negative effects. A biological treatment with albino fungi of the Ophiostoma genus, fungi that degrade the lipidic components of extractives, has been proposed as a more environmentally friendly alternative f...

Mutant strains of Escherichia coli unable to synthesize p-aminobenzoic acid.

Among the growth factor-requiring strains of Escherichia coli obtained in this Laboratory by x-ray treatment or prolonged serial transfer (1, 2) were three strains which grew when p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) was added to the basal medium. The importance of PABA in the metabolism of microorganisms was first indicated when Woods (3) reported that the bacteriostatic action of the sulfonamides is co...
